Ladies and Gentlemen, I have been CHURCED! (pronounced "Choyched")
Anne and I went to see the opening night performance of Langston Hughes' "Black Nativity" at the Intiman Theater tonight.
At least the first half was Langston Hughes' Black Nativity. The traditional story of Jesus' birth was told through gospel music, narration and poetry. It was great. Top notch stuff. This is the 11th year for the performance here in Seattle and the place was nearly filled to capacity.
Then the second half began. Pat Wright and the Total Experience Gospel Choir again filled the stage, but this time, there was no Passion Play presentation. This time, we learned what it was like to be in CHURCH.
It was great. Lots more singing, praising, a good message.....all in a theatrical setting.
I don't know what I was expecting, but this was not it. However, I thoroughly enjoyed it, cried at the beauty of one soloist's rendition of "The Alabaster Box", laughed at the antics of the choir, and felt uplifted.
Thus, the feeling of being "Choyched".
Amen. And so it is.
