Maybe it's because winter is setting in, and maybe because I am hungry for stimulation. But I am getting the urge to expand my cable television package.
DANGER! DANGER! DANGER!
Please stop me from this longing.
Cable TV can suck the lifeblood out of me, leave me unconscious on the couch for days on end. It is the unraveling of civilization.
Find me another stimulating activity with which I can waste my time.
Sure, I have cable TV now. It's not just "Basic" cable. It's "Incredibly Basic". My premium channels are these: "The Weather Channel", "CBC-Vancouver", "Northwest Cable News","The Discovery Channel" about 4 shopping channels and, "The Hallmark Channel".
I think the Cable company does this to torture people. Do you know what is on "The Hallmark Channel"? Why would you, unless you had no other channels to watch? It's re-runs of "Walker, Texas Ranger", "Murder She Wrote", and "Matlock". That's about it. Over and over and over.
Oh, to bathe in the luxury of plain-old "Basic" cable. Imagine. My nights would be filled with "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" and "The Colbert Report". I would understand the world better with CNN and CNBC.
And on weekends! Oh, the fun I would have learning new cooking techniques on "The Food Network". I would travel to Tahiti on "The Travel Channel"and learn about great people on "The Biography Channel".
But this pleasure would set me back another hundred bucks a month. $1200 a year, for the luxury of spending more time on my butt on the couch.
Not worth it. Please forgive my momentary lapse into material longing land.
I know! Maybe I'll upgrade my 2-movies-at-a-time Netflix package to THREE!!!!

Lisa, we have three, maybe four channels at home, and most are fuzzy because we still use an antenna. I've SEEN David in the hotel room, mindlessly flipping through channels for HOURS. I don't want to subject myself to that addiction at home so I always say no to cable. Oh but it would be so nice to watch some of those channels, I totally relate to you on this.
And, right now, you have about 15 more channels than I have. But, I know - Anthony Bourdain - how I miss him. Samantha Brown's quirky trips were fun. Iron Chef America and Good Eats were wonderful time-wasters. But how many times did you sit in front of that TV when there was NOTHING on? Plenty! And increased TV watching increases junk food consumption.
I lived for 10 years with rabbit ears. I was totally fine...I read a lot.
Now we have several hundred channels, a media-center, blu-ray, DVR, plus close to 20 games for our Wii.
And honestly...I still watch about the same amount of TV as I did before...I read as much as I used to. Now...I just watch quality shows and things I want to..instead of settling for 'whatever is on' when I have the urge to watch.
The DVR really is the best way to accomplish this....that way when you do want to sit...only stuff that you want to watch has been collected there for you.
I say do it :) hehe...
I would do cable if there was a DVR, but I don't like the idea of mindlessly flipping channels and eating. But I do wish I could watch the Discovery or History or Food Network.
I don't have cable either, but overall I don't miss it. Don't do it. Its such a waste! Read more. Take the dogs on walks. Its so easy to get sucked in!
I have cable for the news channels. I would go into full blown delirium without my CNN.
DON'T DO IT! DON'T DO IT! DANGER! DANGER! I only have basic cable :) Or invest in sitcoms on DVD... they never get old. Scrubs, Will & Grace...
